TANZANIA: Nyamunga Secondary School Cuts Costs and Pollution with Clean Cooking Energy

Nyamunga Secondary School in Rorya District, Mara, is leading by example in using clean cooking energy, showing how schools and communities can save money while protecting the environment.

The project, recently launched at the school, replaces traditional firewood and charcoal with cleaner cooking methods. Mr. Ismail Ussi, leader of the National Torch Race, spoke at the launch, praising the initiative for promoting sustainable energy and improving health.

Switching to clean energy not only reduces costs but also protects students and staff from harmful smoke. The Ministry of Energy reports that 33,000 people in Tanzania die each year from respiratory diseases caused by household air pollution, often linked to traditional cooking fuels.

The school’s decision demonstrates that practical solutions exist to reduce both environmental damage and health risks. It serves as a model for other institutions and communities across Tanzania to adopt clean energy and fight climate change.

Beldina Nyakeke, who covered the story, notes that initiatives like this highlight the potential of small but impactful changes in schools to promote a healthier, greener future for the country.
