NRM Leaders Rally in South Africa as Diaspora Drive Gains Momentum After Museveni Victory

Senior leaders of Uganda’s ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) travelled to South Africa to celebrate President Yoweri Museveni’s recent electoral victory, signaling not only political solidarity but also a renewed push to strengthen ties with the Ugandan diaspora.

The gathering brought together key party figures and officials, including NRM Secretary General Richard Tadwong, who was received in South Africa by Senior Presidential Advisor on Trade, Phillip Kakuru.

Their presence underscored the importance the government places on engaging Ugandans living abroad as part of its broader national strategy.

Beyond celebration, the visit highlighted ambitious economic plans centered on diaspora investment. Organisers revealed proposals for a major fund that could generate up to $2.5 billion annually.

The initiative is expected to channel resources into critical sectors such as real estate, healthcare, and financial markets—areas seen as essential for Uganda’s long-term growth.

Discussions also included plans to explore the creation of a Ugandan diaspora bank, an idea aimed at strengthening financial inclusion and making it easier for Ugandans abroad to invest back home.

If realised, such a bank could serve as a vital bridge between global capital and domestic development opportunities.

The trip reflects a broader shift in strategy, where political engagement is increasingly tied to economic mobilisation. By leveraging diaspora networks, the NRM hopes to translate international support into tangible investment and development outcomes.

As Uganda looks ahead, the intersection of politics, finance, and diaspora engagement appears set to play a defining role in shaping the country’s economic future.
