“No One Will Threaten You, I Am Here”: Putin Reaffirms Russia–Uganda Ties After Museveni’s Re-Election

Russian President Vladimir Putin has congratulated President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni on his re-election as President of Uganda, reaffirming the long-standing friendly relations between the two countries.

In a formal message, President Putin noted that Russia–Uganda relations have traditionally been warm and cooperative, expressing confidence that Museveni’s continued leadership would further strengthen mutually beneficial engagement between Moscow and Kampala. He also wished the Ugandan leader success in his duties, good health, and continued well-being.

President Museveni was recently re-elected following Uganda’s general elections, extending his long tenure at the helm of the country. His leadership has been marked by active engagement in regional affairs, South–South cooperation, and Uganda’s participation in multilateral platforms such as the Non-Aligned Movement.

Russia and Uganda have maintained diplomatic relations for decades, cooperating in areas including political dialogue, education, military training, energy development, and trade. In recent years, ties between Moscow and several African capitals have gained renewed momentum amid evolving global geopolitical dynamics.

President Putin’s message places Russia among a growing list of world leaders who have formally congratulated President Museveni on his electoral victory, underscoring the continued importance of Uganda–Russia relations on the international stage.
