UGANDA: NIRA to Dispatch Over 100,000 National ID Cards, Diaspora Registration to Start in August

The National Identification and Registration Authority (NIRA) has announced that more than 100,000 Ugandans are set to receive their renewed National Identification Cards, with dispatch to issuance centres already underway.

Speaking during the joint security briefing at Police Headquarters in Naguru on Monday, July 14, 2025, NIRA’s Public Relations Officer Claire Ollama confirmed that the authority had completed the production phase and was now focused on distributing the cards to districts across the country.

“We are pleased to inform the public that over 100,000 renewed National IDs have been produced, and dispatch to respective places of issuance has already begun,” this marks a significant step in easing access to identity documents for citizens,” Ollama said.

In addition to the ongoing distribution, Ollama revealed that registration for Ugandans living abroad will commence in August 2025, starting with Dubai and Qatar.

She noted that coordination with Uganda’s consulates in those countries is already in progress to ensure a smooth rollout.

“We are working closely with our consulates in Dubai and Qatar to begin diaspora registration next month. Engagements with other regions are ongoing as we expand the service to Ugandans globally,” Ollama added.

Ollama also highlighted NIRA’s active presence in schools and other structured community locations, where they are facilitating the registration of children.

To streamline this process, Thursdays and Fridays have been designated as dedicated days for child registration.
Parents will receive real-time updates on the progress of their child’s application, including National Identification Numbers (NINs), card readiness, or queries related to their applications.

Updates will be delivered directly through SMS or email, making the process more transparent and efficient.
The latest developments come as part of NIRA’s broader strategy to enhance citizen access to national identity services and extend registration to Ugandans in the diaspora, in line with the growing demand for reliable identification both locally and internationally.
