Top ACT-Wazalendo leaders Livingstone Lusinde Mpina and Ismail Jussa Othman made a symbolic return to Zanzibar early Saturday, where they were welcomed by a large crowd of supporters and party members. Their arrival was marked by a vibrant procession through the streets, signaling the party’s renewed push for political and economic justice in the Isles.
Addressing the public shortly after landing, the two leaders emphasized their commitment to restoring “the dignity of Zanzibaris” and ensuring that the nation’s wealth is shared equally.
“Our mission is clear — to restore dignity to every citizen and ensure that the resources of this country benefit all, not just a few,” Mpina told the crowd.
The leaders vowed to tackle the long-standing issues of economic inequality, poor service delivery, and political marginalization that have affected many communities in Zanzibar.
Othman, a veteran political figure in the Isles, criticized what he called “a legacy of unfair governance” and promised that ACT-Wazalendo would lead a movement rooted in inclusivity, transparency, and equal opportunity.
“We are not here just for power. We are here to ensure that Zanzibaris are heard, respected, and prioritized,” he said.
The return of Mpina and Othman comes at a critical moment for the party, as it works to strengthen its base ahead of upcoming local elections. Their homecoming is seen as a key step in reconnecting with grassroots supporters and rebuilding political momentum.
ACT-Wazalendo, which has positioned itself as a strong opposition force in both Zanzibar and mainland Tanzania, has consistently advocated for greater autonomy for Zanzibar, stronger democratic institutions, and fair distribution of public resources.
Thousands of supporters lined the roads to welcome the leaders, waving party flags and chanting slogans of unity and change. The reception reflected strong public enthusiasm and hopes for a political shift in the region.
The party leadership hinted at nationwide consultations and listening tours in the coming months as part of their efforts to shape their political agenda based on citizens’ voices.
