Morocco Urges Evacuations as Flooding Forces Over 108,000 From High-Risk Areas

Moroccan authorities have urged residents living in flood-prone areas to evacuate after heavy rainfall triggered widespread flooding, forcing more than 108,000 people from their homes, officials said on Wednesday.

Emergency operations are ongoing in several parts of northwestern Morocco, particularly in Ksar El Kebir province, where rising water levels have disrupted traffic and submerged roads following weeks of sustained rain.

Local authorities said the flooding has been exacerbated by the region’s geography. The Gharb region, one of Morocco’s key wheat-producing areas, consists largely of low-lying plains that drain poorly, making it especially vulnerable to prolonged rainfall.

Images from the area showed rescue teams navigating flooded streets as water spilled into homes and farmland, prompting precautionary evacuations to prevent loss of life.

Officials warned that further rainfall could worsen conditions and urged residents in high-risk zones to comply with evacuation orders while emergency services remain on high alert.

Morocco has in recent years faced increasingly severe weather events, with authorities repeatedly warning that climate variability is intensifying the frequency and impact of floods, particularly in low-lying agricultural regions.
