MOMBASA: 327 Couples Unite in Kwale Mass Wedding Ahead of Ramadan

At least 327 couples from Kwale, Mombasa, and Kilifi counties have officially solemnised their marriages in a colourful mass wedding held at Kwale Baraza Park.

The ceremony, which took place just days before the start of the holy month of Ramadan, was presided over by Acting Chief Kadhi Sukyan Omar Hassan. This year’s event marked the sixth edition of the annual mass wedding.

The initiative was organised by Matuga Member of Parliament Kassim Tandaza in partnership with Bahari FM, a Royal Media Services station, through its popular programme Harusi ya Enzi. The event aims to support couples who are unable to afford the high costs associated with traditional wedding ceremonies.

Speaking during the ceremony, MP Tandaza said the programme helps reduce the financial burden placed on young couples, noting that high bride prices and wedding expenses often delay or prevent marriage. He added that the mass wedding offers a dignified and religiously accepted alternative for couples wishing to formalise their unions.

Chief Kadhi Sukyan Omar Hassan emphasised the importance of legally and religiously registering marriages. He said formalising unions helps protect families and prevents future disputes that can arise from unregistered marriages.

The mass wedding was attended by family members, religious leaders, and local residents, who celebrated the couples as they began their married life together. Organisers said the event continues to grow each year, reflecting strong community support and the need for affordable marriage options.

As the couples prepare for Ramadan, the ceremony offered them not only legal recognition but also a fresh start built on faith, unity, and community support.
