Malawi Airlines to Launch Lilongwe–Entebbe Flights, Strengthening Uganda-Malawi Relations

Uganda and Malawi are set to deepen their diplomatic and economic ties as Malawi Airlines prepares to launch a new direct flight route between Lilongwe and Entebbe this December.

The announcement followed a meeting on Thursday between Uganda’s High Commissioner to Malawi, Ambassador (Rtd) Col. Fred Mwesigye, and Malawi Airlines CEO Solomon Bekele Debay at the airline’s headquarters in Lilongwe. The two leaders discussed ways to improve cooperation in trade, travel, and investment.

Flights Start December 15, 2025.

Malawi Airlines confirmed that flights on the Lilongwe–Entebbe route will begin on December 15, with four flights each week.
The airline says the new route will:

Improve travel between Uganda and Malawi

Support business and trade

Promote tourism

Strengthen relations between the two nations

Serve the Ugandan community living in Malawi and Malawians living in Uganda

CEO Debay thanked the Ugandan government for helping speed up the regulatory process and said the route fits into Malawi Airlines’ plan to expand within the region.

A Boost for Business and Regional Integration

Ambassador Mwesigye welcomed the new development, calling it “a major step forward” in connecting Uganda and Malawi. He said one of his main roles as High Commissioner is to promote business partnerships and stronger bilateral ties.

“Increased connectivity will ultimately support integration and economic growth,” he said.

A Step Toward Stronger Regional Cooperation

The launch of the new route is expected to boost people-to-people connections and create more opportunities for trade, tourism, and investment between the two countries. Both governments say they are optimistic that this direct air link will open the door for deeper cooperation in the years ahead.
