A family in Kaloleni, Kilifi County, is seeking justice following the sudden and mysterious death of their 14-year-old daughter, Muthoni, after she allegedly received an antibiotic injection at a private hospital in Bombolulu.
According to family members, Muthoni, a Grade Eight pupil at Twinkle Stars Junior Secondary School, visited the hospital on October 7, 2025, to seek treatment for a persistent cough.
A medic at the facility reportedly administered an antibiotic injection, after which she was allowed to go home.
However, her condition worsened shortly after leaving the hospital. Relatives say that while traveling home to Mariakani, the teenager began frothing at the mouth and nose, prompting alarm among those accompanying her. Despite efforts to rush her for help, she was pronounced dead soon after.
The devastated family is now calling for justice and an explanation from the hospital and medical authorities.
They believe negligence or a possible allergic reaction may have caused her untimely death.
“We want to know what really happened to our daughter,” a family member told Citizen Digital. “She was healthy when she went to the hospital — how did she die just minutes after an injection?”
A post-mortem examination conducted on October 8, 2025, at the Kilifi County Referral Hospital failed to establish the exact cause of death.
As a result, samples — including body fluids and foam collected from the victim — have been sent to the Government Chemist for detailed forensic analysis.
Authorities from the Ministry of Health and Kilifi County Police have launched investigations to determine whether the medic followed proper procedures in administering the drug, and whether the hospital is duly licensed to handle such treatments.
The death has left residents of Kaloleni deeply shocked, reigniting concerns about the quality of medical services in small private health facilities across the coast region. Many parents are calling on the government to strengthen monitoring of private clinics to prevent similar tragedies.
The family says they will not bury Muthoni until they receive the official toxicology and forensic results explaining the cause of death.
Meanwhile, health officials have urged the public to report suspected medical negligence to relevant authorities for prompt investigation.
