Kenyan Man Charged Over Social Media Post Calling for Uprising

A man has been charged in court for publishing false and provocative information on social media after allegedly calling for violence against politicians.

Boniface Mulinge Muteti was arraigned on Monday at the Milimani Law Courts by detectives from the Special Crime Unit (SCU). He is accused of posting a message on his X (formerly Twitter) account on December 6, 2025, which authorities say was meant to incite violence and cause public unrest.

According to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), Muteti shared a post urging members of the public to seize property owned by politicians. The message also encouraged people to arm themselves and prepare for an uprising. Investigators say the post was false, dangerous, and capable of causing chaos if acted upon.

The prosecution stated that Muteti’s actions violated Section 23 of the Computer Misuse and Cybercrime Act of 2018, which criminalises the publication of false information intended to incite violence or disturb public peace.

Muteti denied the charges when they were read out in court. The magistrate released him on a cash bail of KSh 15,000 as investigations continue. The case is scheduled for a pretrial hearing on December 30, 2025.

Following the court appearance, the DCI warned Kenyans to use social media responsibly. Authorities reminded the public that spreading false or inflammatory information online is a serious offence and can lead to arrest and prosecution.

The case comes amid increased government concern over the misuse of social media platforms to spread harmful content, especially messages that threaten national security and public safety.
