KENYA: Two Suspects Arrested in Crackdown on Highway Robbery Gang Along Eldoret–Malaba Route

Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) have arrested two men believed to be members of a criminal syndicate responsible for a string of violent robberies targeting motorists along the Eldoret–Malaba highway.

The suspects, identified as William Simiyu and Byron Werunga, were apprehended during a coordinated operation led by officers from Matete and Webuye Police Stations after several days of intense surveillance.

According to a DCI statement, the duo is linked to a series of late-night ambushes that have left travellers shaken and property stolen along the busy transport corridor connecting Kenya to Uganda.

“Upon interrogation, the suspects led officers to their hideouts along River Nzoia and Nabuyola Village, where a cache of stolen goods was recovered,” the DCI said.

Recovered items include three 6kg gas cylinders, assorted electronics, and several vehicle batteries, all believed to have been stolen from victims during the highway attacks.

The DCI noted that the arrests mark a significant breakthrough in efforts to dismantle organized criminal networks preying on motorists in western Kenya.

The two suspects are currently in police custody and will be arraigned in court once investigations are complete.

Authorities have urged travellers to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity to nearby police stations as intensified patrols continue along the highway.
