Two people have died and one was injured after a lorry they were travelling in lost control and plunged into River Kipsonoi early Saturday morning in Bomet County.
The accident happened around 5:00 a.m. at Soimet Bridge along the busy Kaplong-Bomet highway. According to Bomet Disaster Management Officer Stanley Mutai, the lorry hit a speed bump, causing the driver to lose control before the vehicle veered off the road and fell into the river.
Bomet County Police Commander Edward Imbwaga confirmed the incident. He said that a third passenger, a 27-year-old man, survived the crash but suffered a broken leg. He is currently being treated at Kapkatet Hospital.
Emergency responders arrived at the scene shortly after the accident, and the two bodies were recovered from the river. The deceased have been taken to the Kapkatet Hospital mortuary for identification and postmortem examination.
Authorities are urging drivers to be extra cautious, especially as the country is experiencing short rains, which have made many roads slippery and dangerous.
The incident is under investigation, and officials have promised to check if the bridge area needs more warning signs or better road markings to prevent future accidents.
