The death of former Prime Minister and ODM leader Raila Odinga, together with the rise of Gen Z-led protests, were the most important events that shaped how Kenyans viewed the year 2025, according to a new Infotrak End of Year Poll.
The survey shows that 30 per cent of respondents named Raila Odinga’s death as the single most significant event of the year. Raila passed away in October 2025 while receiving medical treatment in India, an event that deeply affected the nation and drew widespread mourning across the country.
Gen Z-led protests came second, mentioned by 12 per cent of respondents. The youth-led demonstrations, which began in 2024, continued to influence national conversations in 2025, especially around governance, accountability, and economic issues.
Economic challenges also featured strongly in the poll. About 11 per cent of those surveyed said the high cost of living was the most significant issue of the year, while 8 per cent pointed to politics and governance. Security concerns such as abductions and killings were cited by 6 per cent, the same percentage that mentioned general financial hardship.
Employment challenges, as well as personal and family issues, were each mentioned by 5 per cent of respondents. Peace and stability accounted for 4 per cent, while business challenges, affordable housing, and agricultural support such as free fertiliser were each cited by 3 per cent.
Other issues, including crime and insecurity, the deaths of other leaders, and health policy changes, received lower mentions. Taxation was the least cited concern, at less than one per cent.
The poll was conducted between December 19 and 20, 2025, using telephone interviews with 1,000 respondents from all 47 counties.
Overall, the findings show that political events, youth activism, and economic pressure were at the centre of public attention in Kenya throughout 2025, shaping how citizens reflect on the year.
