Kenyan security agencies have intercepted a Kenya-bound bus from Tanzania carrying cannabis (bhang) worth about Ksh.2.5 million at the Namanga One-Stop Border Post.
According to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), the bus, operated by Kidia One Express, was stopped during a routine security inspection. The operation involved a multi-agency team made up of officers from the Anti-Narcotic Unit (ANU), Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA), Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS), and the Police Dog Unit.
After a careful search, detectives discovered four tightly wrapped bundles containing 84 packets of cannabis, weighing a total of 84 kilograms. The drugs were hidden inside the bus and were believed to be headed for the Kenyan market.
The bus driver, George Ngoba (37), and the conductor, Trisha Lucas (25), both Tanzanian nationals, were immediately arrested. The seized cannabis was taken in as exhibits to be used in court as investigations continue.
In a statement, the DCI said the interception shows the government’s strong commitment to fighting drug trafficking through intelligence-led operations, teamwork among agencies, and strict border controls. Authorities noted that such efforts are aimed at breaking drug networks, prosecuting offenders, and protecting communities from the dangers of illegal drugs.
The suspects are expected to be arraigned in court, while further investigations continue to establish the source and intended recipients of the narcotics.
The Namanga border remains a key focus point for security agencies as they step up efforts to curb cross-border drug smuggling and other forms of transnational crime.
