Kenya’s media industry is in mourning following the sudden deaths of two respected journalists who passed away within hours of each other on Thursday, October 23, 2025. Their unexpected passing has left colleagues, friends, and fans in deep sorrow.
The first journalist, Sammy Lui Wang’ondu, was a veteran broadcaster and former KBC and KTN news anchor. His son, Chris Wang’ondu, confirmed that his father died peacefully on Thursday morning, though the exact cause of death has not yet been revealed.
Sammy Lui was widely admired for his deep, commanding, and calm voice that graced many national events for decades.
He served as the State House Master of Ceremonies, handling major government functions under the leadership of Presidents Daniel arap Moi, Mwai Kibaki, and Uhuru Kenyatta.
His voice became a symbol of dignity and professionalism, often heard during national celebrations and state functions.
Beyond his career, Lui was also the father of Nick Wang’ondu, a former Big Brother Kenya contestant. He had recently faced personal challenges, including being among residents affected by demolitions in Woodley Estate, Nairobi, in late 2024. Despite these struggles, he remained active in mentorship and community work, inspiring many young journalists.
The second journalist, whose identity had not been officially confirmed at the time of reporting, is also said to have died on the same day from sudden health complications.
Sources within the media fraternity noted that both deaths appeared unrelated but occurred almost simultaneously — deepening the sense of loss within Kenya’s journalism community.
Tributes have poured in across social media, with fellow broadcasters, politicians, and the public sharing heartfelt messages of condolence. Many described the two as “pillars of Kenyan journalism” whose dedication and voices shaped how news was told for decades.
“Sammy Lui was not just a broadcaster; he was a mentor and a national voice. His legacy will live on,” one journalist posted on X (formerly Twitter).
As Kenyans continue to mourn, their passing serves as a powerful reminder of the fleeting nature of life and the lasting impact of journalists who dedicate their lives to informing and inspiring the public.
May their souls rest in peace.
