Kenya Mourns Raila Odinga’s Sister, Beryl Achieng Odinga

Kenya is in mourning following the sudden passing of Beryl Achieng Odinga, sister to former Prime Minister Raila Odinga and a respected public servant whose influence reached across the continent.

Beryl, daughter of the late Jaramogi Oginga Odinga and Mama Mary Ajuma Oginga, was celebrated as a visionary professional and a pillar within the Odinga family. Her death has sparked a wave of condolences from leaders and citizens, reflecting the deep impact she made in both national and regional development spaces.

President William Ruto led the nation in mourning, eulogising Beryl as “a trailblazer, a great intellectual, and a woman whose contribution to public service will be remembered for generations.”

He highlighted her distinguished career, noting that her work began in the 1980s as an urban planner in Zimbabwe, where she played a key role in shaping transformative urban development projects. Her professionalism and dedication positioned her as one of the few Kenyan women working at a high level across Africa during that period.

Upon her return to Kenya, Beryl continued her commitment to public service. In 2020, she was appointed Chairperson of the Nairobi Water and Sewerage Company, where she steered major reforms aimed at improving efficiency and service delivery for Nairobi residents. Her leadership earned her widespread respect and recognition for strengthening one of the city’s most essential institutions.

President Ruto praised her as a woman who “opened doors for many career women” and whose legacy would continue to inspire future generations.

The Odinga family announced her passing with deep sorrow, describing Beryl as a devoted mother to Ami Auma, Chizi, and Taurai. In their message, they expressed both heartbreak and gratitude, noting that although her absence leaves a profound void, they take comfort in the belief that she rests peacefully in God’s care.

As tributes pour in from across the country—from leaders, professionals, colleagues, and citizens—Kenya stands united in honouring a woman whose contributions shaped communities both at home and abroad.

Beryl Achieng Odinga leaves behind a rich legacy of service, intellect, and leadership. Her memory continues to shine brightly in the hearts of those she inspired.
