The Kenya Meteorological Department (Kenya Met) has issued a weather warning for the Christmas week, urging Kenyans to prepare for moderate to heavy rainfall across several parts of the country.
In its five-day weather advisory covering December 23 to 27, Kenya Met said heavy rains are expected in Central Kenya, Western Kenya, the Lake Victoria region, the Rift Valley, and parts of the Coast. The weather is likely to disrupt Christmas travel and holiday activities.
According to the forecast, heavy rainfall and thunderstorms were expected on Tuesday, December 23, especially in the Lake Basin, Rift Valley, and Western Kenya. These storms could be dangerous, posing risks to outdoor activities, transport, and infrastructure.
Rainfall is expected to reduce slightly from Wednesday, December 24, to Saturday, December 27. However, showers will continue throughout the period, including on Christmas Day.
At least 20 counties are likely to receive significant rainfall. These include Siaya, Kisumu, Homa Bay, Migori, Kisii, Nyamira, Trans Nzoia, Baringo, Uasin Gishu, Elgeyo Marakwet, Nandi, Nakuru, Narok, Kericho, Bomet, Kakamega, Vihiga, Bungoma, Busia, and West Pokot. Central Kenya counties such as Nyandarua, Laikipia, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Murang’a, Kiambu, Meru, Embu, Tharaka Nithi, and Nairobi will also experience heavy rains, mainly in the afternoons and evenings.
The heavy rains raise concerns about flooding, mudslides, and transport disruptions, especially in densely populated and agricultural regions.
Coastal counties, including Mombasa, Kilifi, Lamu, Kwale, and parts of Tana River, are expected to receive light rainfall. This is likely to provide better weather conditions for tourists visiting the coast during the holiday season.
Meanwhile, the South Eastern Lowlands and North Eastern regions are expected to remain mostly dry and sunny, with only occasional showers.
Kenya Met also warned of very cold nights in Central Kenya, with temperatures expected to drop as low as 5°C. Residents in affected areas have been advised to wear warm clothing and take precautions against the cold. Despite the rains, daytime temperatures in parts of the Lake Basin, Western Kenya, and Rift Valley may rise to about 32°C.
With many Kenyans traveling for Christmas, the meteorological department has urged the public to monitor weather updates, avoid travel during heavy rains, and take safety measures against lightning and flooding.
