Four suspects have been arrested for defrauding a businessman by pretending to be senior Kenya Prisons officers. The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) said the group conned the businessman Ksh.105,000, claiming they would supply vegetables to Kitui GK Prisons under a fake tender.
The suspects—Clement Wachira, Andrew Kimani, Ann Waweru, and Rehema Makandi—disappeared with the money, prompting a police investigation that led to their arrest.
During a search of their vehicle, authorities recovered 37 counterfeit Kenya Prisons Service tender approval forms, two fake prison job ID cards, six additional IDs belonging to different people, and eight mobile phones.
The four suspects will remain in custody pending arraignment. The DCI has warned the public to be cautious of individuals claiming to act on behalf of government institutions and urged businesses to verify all tenders and contracts before making payments.
This case highlights the growing sophistication of fraud schemes in Kenya, where scammers impersonate government officials to exploit unsuspecting victims.
