The Kenya government has officially declared Friday, March 20, 2026, a public holiday in celebration of Eid al-Fitr.
In a gazette notice issued on Wednesday, Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen announced the holiday in accordance with Section 2(1) of the Public Holidays Act.
Eid al-Fitr is one of the most significant occasions in the Islamic calendar, marking the end of Ramadan, a period observed through daily fasting from dawn to sunset.
Muslims began observing Ramadan on February 18, 2026, dedicating 29 to 30 days to fasting, prayer, and reflection. The holy month emphasises self-discipline, spiritual growth, and compassion for others.
As the ninth month of the Islamic lunar calendar, Ramadan also commemorates the revelation of the Quran to Prophet Muhammad, making it a deeply significant period for the Muslim faithful.
The declaration of the public holiday allows Muslims across the country to celebrate Eid al-Fitr through prayers, charity, and communal gatherings.
