KENYA: DCI Hunts Car Importer Accused of Defrauding UN Staff and Foreign Clients

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has launched a nationwide manhunt for Timothy Njeru Wanjuki, the director and sole shareholder of East Africa Motors Limited, over alleged car import fraud involving millions of shillings.

In a statement issued on Friday, the DCI said Wanjuki is accused of obtaining money by false pretences after allegedly targeting foreign nationals, including United Nations staff based in Nairobi. Investigators say he promised to import vehicles for clients but failed to deliver in many cases.

According to the DCI, victims paid large sums of money, amounting to tens of thousands of US dollars, into accounts controlled by the suspect. While some vehicles were eventually imported, investigators say payments to overseas suppliers, mainly in Japan, were often incomplete. This led to delays, additional charges, storage fees and financial losses for customers. In several cases, clients reportedly received no vehicles at all.

Further investigations revealed that East Africa Motors Limited shut down its physical offices and moved its operations online. Following DCI intervention, the company’s website was taken down to stop further transactions, and its registration has since been cancelled.

The DCI said efforts to trace and arrest Wanjuki are ongoing, with multiple investigative units involved in the search. The agency has warned the public against conducting any business with the suspect or any companies linked to him.

The DCI has urged anyone with pending complaints, unresolved cases or useful information related to the suspect to report to the Serious Crime Unit. Members of the public with information that could help locate the suspect have also been encouraged to share details through the DCI’s toll-free hotlines.

Authorities say investigations will continue until the suspect is arrested and all victims are accounted for.
