Kenya Confident of Meeting AFCON 2027 Hosting Fee Deadline

Kenya is set to meet the March 30 deadline to pay its hosting fee for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), Sports Principal Secretary Elijah Mwangi has confirmed.

Speaking in Murang’a, Mwangi reassured Kenyans that while the Sh3.5 billion fee has not yet been disbursed, the funds are available and will be released once Parliament approves the supplementary budget.

The payment is crucial for Kenya’s role in the joint East African bid alongside Uganda and Tanzania, marking the first time the region will host Africa’s premier football competition.

Mwangi emphasized that the National Treasury will fast-track the release of funds once parliamentary approval is secured, ensuring the country meets the Confederation of African Football (CAF) deadline.

Beyond the hosting fee, Kenya faces additional responsibilities, including upgrading key stadiums such as Kasarani and Nyayo, improving training facilities, and enhancing accommodation infrastructure to meet CAF standards. These investments form part of the government’s broader sports development agenda.

The three countries previously tested their hosting capabilities during the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN), gaining experience in coordination, security, and fan engagement.

While challenges remain, Mwangi expressed confidence that Kenya will deliver on its obligations, stressing that there are still ten days before the deadline for payment.
