A clinical officer at Chemaner Health Centre in Bomet County has been arrested after allegedly raping a pregnant woman during a routine maternity check-up.
The suspect, identified as Eric Langat, also known as Kirinyet, was arrested following an incident that occurred inside one of the consultation rooms at the facility.
Confirming the arrest, Bomet East Sub-County Police Commander Michael Singa said the officer is accused of committing the offence while attending to the victim during a scheduled medical visit.
According to police, the victim raised alarm by screaming for help, drawing the attention of other patients and health workers. When they rushed to the room, they allegedly found the clinical officer in a compromising situation. The suspect reportedly fled the scene as people gathered.
The incident was later reported at Chemaner Police Station, prompting officers to launch a manhunt. The suspect was eventually tracked down and arrested at his hideout.
Police officers, together with hospital staff, assisted the victim and escorted her to Longisa County Referral Hospital, where she underwent medical examination and received counselling and psychological support.
Sources familiar with the case claim the suspect may have been linked to two similar incidents in the past that were never formally reported, allegedly due to his close ties with senior medical administrators. Police, however, said these claims are still under investigation.
Commander Singa stated that investigations are ongoing and assured the public that justice would be served. He added that the suspect will be arraigned in court once investigations are completed.
Authorities have also urged members of the public to report cases of sexual abuse promptly and encouraged health institutions to strengthen safeguards to protect patients, especially vulnerable women seeking medical care.
