In a significant development for residents of Kasokoso, President Yoweri Museveni has ordered an immediate halt to the planned evictions from the disputed 400-acre plot of land.
The directive, which came during an official handover ceremony on Sunday, was welcomed by the residents who have long struggled with the threat of eviction.
The land in question has been at the center of a prolonged dispute, with the National Housing and Construction Company (NHCC) claiming ownership.
The company had intended to repossess the land for its own development projects. However, Museveni’s directive has provided a temporary reprieve for the residents, who had faced uncertainty regarding their homes and livelihoods.
Alongside the eviction ban, Museveni’s order included provisions for alternative land to be allocated to the NHCC, allowing the company to pursue its housing initiatives without displacing the Kasokoso residents.
The decision marks a significant shift in the approach to land ownership disputes, with the government recognizing the need for both development and the protection of citizens’ rights.
