Kasibante Withdraws Election Petition Against Museveni, Citing High Litigation Costs

6 February 2026 | By Daily Monitor

Former presidential candidate Robert Kasibante has officially withdrawn his election petition challenging President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni’s victory in Uganda’s recent elections.

Kasibante stated that pursuing the legal case would cost approximately $5 million, an amount beyond the reach of him and his political party. He emphasized that the financial burden was the main reason for halting the petition, despite earlier pledges from some political allies to support the legal challenge.

The withdrawal comes amid ongoing discussions about Uganda’s electoral environment. While the 2026 elections were praised by government officials and military leaders, including Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, as the most peaceful in Uganda’s history, independent observers and rights groups have noted limitations on political freedoms, including restricted NGO operations and communication blackouts.

The Electoral Commission confirmed that the polls were conducted with minimal disruption and urged contesting parties to seek legal redress if necessary. Kasibante’s decision highlights the high financial and logistical barriers facing candidates in challenging election outcomes, a factor that critics argue limits access to justice in Uganda’s political system.
