Kampala’s political leaders and transport operators have expressed their readiness to host President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni as he begins his 2026 presidential campaign tour in the capital. The leaders highlighted the city’s development achievements, improvements in security, and the President’s continued engagement with the residents of Kampala as key reasons for his expected warm reception.
Kampala’s Preparation for Museveni’s Visit
Hajjat Minsa Kabanda, the Minister for Kampala and Metropolitan Affairs and an aspiring Member of Parliament for Kampala Central, assured the public that the city is fully prepared for the President’s visit. The tour is set to kick off on January 5, 2026, and will run until January 12, culminating in a grand rally at the Kololo Ceremonial Grounds.
Kabanda emphasized the significance of the upcoming rally, pointing out that President Museveni has consistently shown a commitment to improving Kampala’s infrastructure, security, and service delivery. “Kampala has greatly benefited from President Museveni’s leadership,” she said. “If given another mandate, he is ready to push further, especially in upgrading our infrastructure and improving critical services.”
A Call for Unity and Support
Kabanda called on all residents of Kampala to come out in large numbers to attend the rallies and show appreciation for Museveni’s leadership over the years. “Let us thank the President for the peace, redevelopment, and stability he has ensured for our city and country,” she urged.
The Minister also appealed to supporters of other political parties to join forces with the National Resistance Movement (NRM) in the upcoming general elections, stressing that Uganda’s future requires unity and cooperation. She particularly encouraged members of the Democratic Party (DP), which has not fielded a presidential candidate, to support Museveni for a better Uganda.
Support from Kampala’s Transport Sector
Support for President Museveni was also echoed by Rashid Sekindi, Chairman of the Federation of Uganda Taxi Operators (UTOF), who expressed confidence in the President’s continued support for the taxi sector. Sekindi, accompanied by Deputy Administrator Mayambala Mustafa, praised the President for his responsiveness to the needs of the transport operators. “President Museveni understands the challenges faced by taxi operators and has always supported our work,” Sekindi stated.
He further urged taxi drivers and conductors across the city to engage in peaceful participation during the election period, promoting calm and avoiding confrontations while carrying out their duties.
Looking Ahead to 2026 Elections
The NRM campaign activities in Kampala will serve as a platform to highlight the party’s achievements under President Museveni’s leadership and to mobilize further support ahead of the 2026 elections. Kabanda, in her Christmas and New Year message, encouraged Ugandans to reflect on their achievements and future aspirations while preparing for the January 15, 2026, general elections.
As the city prepares for the arrival of President Museveni, the campaign tour promises to be a significant event in the run-up to Uganda’s next election, with political leaders and transport sectors already rallying behind the President’s vision for continued progress and stability.
