Israel has defended its engagement with Somaliland after reports raised concern at the United Nations about plans linked to Gaza and a possible military presence in the Horn of Africa.
According to Israeli officials, contacts with Somaliland are part of broader diplomatic and security interests in the region. Israel said it has the right to build international partnerships and denied that its actions are meant to destabilise the region or violate international law.
However, the United Nations has expressed serious concern. UN officials warned against any plans that could involve relocating people from Gaza or establishing foreign military bases without broad international agreement. They said forced relocation of civilians would violate international law and could worsen the humanitarian crisis in Gaza.
During a UN Security Council meeting, several countries urged Israel to respect international rules, protect civilians, and avoid actions that could increase regional tensions. They also stressed the importance of African regional stability and respect for the sovereignty of states.
The issue comes at a time of heightened global focus on the war in Gaza and its wider impact beyond the Middle East. While Israel insists its actions are being misunderstood, the UN has called for transparency, dialogue, and strict respect for human rights and international law.
