How Floods Affected More Than 60 Families in Homa Bay

More than 60 families have been affected by floods in Bala area, Koyugi Location, in Karachuonyo Constituency after River Oluch burst its banks following heavy rainfall.

Local authorities reported that at least 10 families were forced to leave their homes after floodwaters submerged houses and surrounding areas. Many residents lost property as strong water currents swept away household items, chickens, and crops.

Area chief Irene Ojwang confirmed that affected families have been moved to safer areas to prevent injuries or loss of life. Temporary shelter has been arranged in nearby churches and at Bala Comprehensive School as the rains continue.

The floods also affected development projects in the region. Parts of the Riwa Special Economic Zone, which is currently under construction through a partnership between the national and county governments, were flooded.

Transport in the area has also been disrupted. Floodwaters have made sections of the Bala–Homa Bay Road difficult to pass, affecting movement for residents and businesses.

Authorities have advised people living near rivers and low-lying areas to move to safer locations as heavy rains continue in several parts of the country. Residents are also being encouraged to remain alert and follow safety guidance from local leaders and emergency teams.

Local officials say they are monitoring the situation closely and may provide further assistance if the floods worsen.
