History in the Making: CHAN 2024 Kicks Off as Taifa Stars Face Burkina Faso in Dar es Salaam

Football fans across Tanzania are brimming with excitement as the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN) officially kicks off tonight at the Benjamin Mkapa National Stadium.

Tanzania is making history by co-hosting the tournament for the first time, alongside Kenya and Uganda.

The opening match features Tanzania’s national team, Taifa Stars, taking on Burkina Faso in what promises to be an electrifying start to the 8th edition of CHAN a tournament that exclusively features players who play in their home countries’ domestic leagues.

Hosting CHAN 2024 marks a major milestone for East Africa. It’s the first time three countries have co-hosted the competition, showing strong regional unity and commitment to sports development.

Prime Minister Kassim Majaliwa will officiate the grand opening ceremony tonight, with performances, fireworks, and flag parades expected to dazzle fans both in the stadium and watching from home.

The Taifa Stars, coached by Honour Janza, have been in camp for several weeks and are eager to make the nation proud. Team captain Bakari Mwamnyeto said the squad is motivated and prepared:

“We know the weight of this moment. Playing at home in front of our fans is a huge honour. We will give our all.”
CHAN is different from other continental tournaments because only players competing in their national leagues are eligible. This creates a unique opportunity for local talent to shine on a big stage.

Tanzania Premier League players will now get to test their skills against some of Africa’s best homegrown stars. The government and sports officials hope this exposure will improve the quality of domestic football and inspire the next generation of players.

The government has assured fans of tight security at all venues. Hotels in Dar es Salaam are reporting high bookings, with thousands of visitors expected during the group stages.

Tourism and hospitality businesses are also set to benefit, with CHAN boosting the city’s economy. Vendors, transport operators, and content creators are seeing increased activity around match venues.

After tonight’s opening match, the tournament will continue across stadiums in Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania over the next three weeks. The final is scheduled to take place in Nairobi.

Fans are encouraged to turn up in large numbers and support Taifa Stars, who aim to progress beyond the group stage and make a deep run into the tournament.

CHAN 2024 is more than just football it’s a celebration of unity, talent, and national pride. As the continent watches, all eyes will be on Taifa Stars tonight. With strong preparation, home advantage, and passionate fans, Tanzania has a golden chance to make history on the field.
