Heavy Rains Flood Nairobi Streets, Disrupt Transport Across the City

Heavy rains have caused serious flooding in several parts of Nairobi, turning major roads into streams and disrupting transport across the city.

The downpour, which started in the evening, quickly overwhelmed drainage systems in areas such as Nairobi West, South C and South B, leaving roads submerged and making it difficult for vehicles to move.

One of the hardest-hit areas was Uhuru Highway, a key road in the capital, where floodwaters nearly submerged several vehicles and forced motorists to slow down or abandon their routes.

Flooding was also reported in Kilimani and parts of the Central Business District, where water flowed through streets, causing heavy traffic jams and forcing commuters to walk through flooded roads after public transport stalled.

Residents in South C said water entered some homes after drainage channels failed to handle the sudden surge of rainwater, leaving families struggling to protect their property.

The floods triggered frustration among many city residents, who blamed the Nairobi City County Government for poor drainage management. Critics say blocked drainage systems, uncollected garbage and rapid urban development without proper infrastructure have made the city more vulnerable to flooding whenever heavy rains occur.

Weather experts warn that continued rainfall could worsen the situation if drainage systems remain clogged, urging authorities to improve stormwater management to prevent future flooding.

Officials have advised motorists and residents to remain cautious while moving through flooded areas and avoid driving or walking through deep water as heavy rains continue in the region.
