Gunman Opens Fire in NYC Skyscraper, Kills 5 Including Police Officer

At least five people are dead, including a New York City police officer and the suspected gunman, after a mass shooting at a high-rise office building in Midtown Manhattan, New York City.

The attack happened at around 6 p.m. on Monday, July 28, 2025, at 345 Park Avenue, a skyscraper that houses major companies like Blackstone, KPMG, Deutsche Bank, and the headquarters of the NFL.

According to Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch, surveillance cameras show a man getting out of a double-parked black BMW near the building. He was carrying an M4 assault rifle.

He entered the building, turned right into the lobby, and immediately shot an NYPD officer — 36-year-old Officer Didarul Islam, who died on the scene. Islam was married, a father of two young boys, and his wife is expecting their third child.

The attacker then shot and killed a woman and a security officer on the ground floor. He made his way up to the 33rd floor, where he killed another man. A fifth victim is hospitalized in critical condition.

The suspect, identified as Shane Tamura, a 27-year-old man with a Las Vegas address, was later shot and killed by police. His motive is still unknown. Authorities say he had no known criminal record and no connection to the victims, based on early investigations.

At a late-night press briefing, New York City Mayor Eric Adams paid tribute to Officer Islam, who he said “gave his life to protect others” and called the event another “senseless act of gun violence.”

“Our hearts are heavy. We lost four innocent lives, including a heroic officer who died in the line of duty,” Adams said.

The FBI and other federal agencies have joined the investigation to look into any broader threats or potential ties to domestic terrorism.

The shooting occurred just blocks away from Rockefeller Center and Central Park, shocking a normally busy part of the city filled with office workers, tourists, and commuters.

Just hours earlier, another mass shooting occurred in Reno, Nevada, outside the Grand Sierra Resort casino. A man with a pistol opened fire at the valet station, killing three people and critically wounding two more.

The shooter, an unidentified adult male, was shot by police and remains in serious condition. Authorities believe the victims were randomly targeted.

Deadly gun violence rocked both New York City and Reno on July 28. In Manhattan, a heavily armed man stormed a major skyscraper, killing 5 — including a brave NYPD officer. In Reno, three more died in a casino shooting. Motives? Still unknown.
