Ghana Raises Concern Over Post-Election Unrest in Tanzania, Calls for Calm and Respect for Democratic Processes

The Government of Ghana has expressed growing concern over the political tension and reported human-rights violations following Tanzania’s post-election unrest. The statement comes amid rising regional and international anxiety over the deteriorating situation after recent elections triggered widespread protests and allegations of excessive force by security agencies.

According to Joyce Adwoa Animia Ocran, an ISD contributor, Ghana is closely monitoring the developments and is calling for restraint from all parties involved. The government emphasized that stability in Tanzania is critical not only for its citizens but also for the East African region, where political upheavals often have cross-border implications.

Ghana urged Tanzanian authorities to prioritize dialogue, transparency, and adherence to democratic norms, particularly regarding the handling of political dissent. The statement underscores Ghana’s longstanding foreign policy stance of promoting peace, constitutional order, and respect for human rights within Africa.

The concerns follow reports from various international observers and civil society groups indicating clashes between civilians and security forces, arrests of opposition supporters, and fears of shrinking civic space. Ghana has called for a swift investigation into the allegations to ensure accountability and restore public confidence.

Additionally, the government encouraged regional bodies—particularly the African Union (AU) and the East African Community (EAC)—to engage Tanzanian authorities and offer mediation support where necessary. Ghana noted that maintaining democratic integrity is essential for strengthening continental partnerships and avoiding long-term instability.

As a country with its own history of peaceful transitions and democratic progress, Ghana reiterated its readiness to support any effort that promotes calm, protects lives, and helps Tanzania return to a stable post-election environment.
