As Uganda joins the rest of the world in celebrating International Women’s Day, inspiring stories of determination and resilience continue to emerge. One such story is that of Lonny Twinamatsiko, a university graduate who has chosen dignity in honest work despite facing the harsh realities of unemployment.
Twinamatsiko, 35, graduated with a degree in Public Administration from Uganda Christian University and later earned additional certificates from Makerere University. Like many educated young Ugandans, she hoped her qualifications would lead to a stable job. However, the search for employment proved challenging.
Choosing Dignity Through Honest Work
Rather than giving up, Twinamatsiko decided to take a different path. She now works as a toilet attendant and cleaner at a public facility in Kabale, a job she says has helped her survive and maintain independence.
When visited at her workplace, she was busy ensuring the facility remained clean and functional for the community. Despite the modest nature of the work, she carries it out with pride and dedication.
“This work has helped me buy things like a phone, food and other items I use at home,” she explained, showing that even small opportunities can make a difference.
Challenges Along the Way
Although the job allows her to meet some basic needs, it also comes with challenges. Twinamatsiko noted that maintaining the facility often requires spending money on cleaning materials, sometimes leaving her with little profit.
“My expenditure is higher than my income,” she said. “Some customers misuse or dirty the facility excessively, and when it’s time to clean it, I end up spending a lot.”
Despite these difficulties, she remains determined and committed to her work.
A Message to Young People
Twinamatsiko believes that no honest job should be looked down upon. Her experience has taught her that dignity comes from perseverance and the willingness to work hard, even when circumstances are not ideal.
She encourages young people facing unemployment to stay strong and embrace any opportunity available while continuing to pursue their dreams.
A Reflection of Women’s Strength
As Uganda commemorates International Women’s Day, stories like Twinamatsiko’s highlight the strength, resilience, and determination of women across the country. While challenges such as unemployment remain real, her story serves as a reminder that courage and hard work can help individuals navigate difficult times.
Through her perseverance, Lonny Twinamatsiko stands as an example of the spirit of many Ugandan women—resilient, hardworking, and determined to build a better future despite obstacles.
