Former Prince Andrew Arrested in U.K. Over Epstein-Linked Allegations

Former British royal Prince Andrew, now known as Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor, was arrested on Thursday in the United Kingdom on suspicion of misconduct in public office.

Police later released him after 11 hours in custody. He remains “under investigation,” meaning he has not been charged but inquiries are ongoing.

Why He Was Arrested

According to Thames Valley Police, the investigation relates to claims that Andrew may have shared confidential government documents with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein while serving as the U.K.’s trade envoy in 2010.

Recent files released in the United States reportedly included an email appearing to show Andrew forwarding an official report to Epstein about a visit to Southeast Asia.

Police said misconduct in public office is a serious offence in the U.K. and can carry a maximum sentence of life imprisonment.

Authorities searched two properties linked to Andrew — one in Berkshire and another on the Sandringham Estate in Norfolk, where he recently moved.

A Historic Arrest

This is believed to be the first time in centuries that a senior member of the British royal family has been arrested in connection with criminal allegations.

Andrew, who turned 66 on the day of his arrest, has long denied wrongdoing related to Epstein.

He stepped back from royal duties in 2019 after public criticism over his ties to Epstein. In 2022, he reached an out-of-court settlement with Virginia Giuffre, who had accused him of sexual abuse when she was 17. He denied the allegations but agreed to the settlement without admitting liability.

Reaction from the Royal Family and Leaders

King Charles III expressed “deep concern” about the arrest and said that “the law must take its course.” He added that the royal family would fully cooperate with authorities.

In the United States, President Donald Trump described the situation as “very sad” and said it was damaging for the royal family.

The family of Virginia Giuffre welcomed the arrest, saying it showed that “no one is above the law.”

What Happens Next

Andrew has not been charged, and investigations are ongoing. Police say they will provide updates when appropriate.

Legal experts say the case could take months, depending on the evidence gathered and decisions made by prosecutors.

The development marks another major challenge for Britain’s royal family, which has faced years of scrutiny over Andrew’s past connections and conduct.
