Former Investment Minister Geofrey Mwambe Detained as Police Probe Criminal Allegations

Tanzania’s Police Force has detained former Minister for Investment Geofrey Mwambe as part of an ongoing criminal investigation, authorities confirmed on Friday.

Mr. Mwambe, who previously served as the Member of Parliament for Mtwara Urban and later as Minister for Investment under the President’s Office, was arrested in Dar es Salaam after being summoned to assist with investigations.

According to police sources, the detention is linked to suspected financial and administrative irregularities that allegedly occurred during his time in public office. However, officials did not disclose specific charges, saying investigations are still underway.

“We are conducting a lawful investigation, and Mr. Mwambe is cooperating with us,” a senior police officer said, noting that more details will be released once the probe is complete.

The former minister is expected to remain in custody as investigators review documents and interview additional witnesses. His family and legal team have been informed of the situation.

Mr. Mwambe, known for his work in promoting investment reforms and engaging the private sector, has not yet issued a public statement.

The case comes at a time when the government has intensified efforts to strengthen accountability within public institutions, following a series of national audits and anti-corruption campaigns.

Meanwhile, Tanzanians continue to follow the matter closely as it unfolds, with many awaiting clarity on the allegations and the next steps by police and prosecutors.
