Officials from the Ministry of Energy, MUMA, and Solidaridad Uganda have highlighted the benefits of formalising artisanal mining during a visit to a gold mining site in Bukuya Town Council, Kasanda District.
Artisanal mining, which is often small-scale and informal, provides livelihoods for thousands of Ugandans. However, unregulated mining has led to safety risks, environmental damage, and lost revenue for the government. Formalisation would ensure miners operate legally, follow safety standards, and contribute to Uganda’s economy through taxes and royalties.
Supporters say the move could also attract investment, improve working conditions, and create new opportunities for local communities. By introducing training, better equipment, and formal oversight, artisanal miners can increase productivity while reducing environmental harm.
According to the officials, formalisation is not only a step toward safer mining but also a strategy to tap into Uganda’s mineral wealth more efficiently.
If successfully implemented, it could transform artisanal mining from a largely informal activity into a sustainable and profitable sector.
