EU Bans Gel Nail Chemical Over Safety Concerns — UK May Follow in 2026

The European Union (EU) has officially banned a chemical commonly used in gel nail polishes due to safety concerns. The chemical, known as TPO (trimethylbenzoyl diphenylphosphine oxide), was banned across Norway, Switzerland, and all 27 EU member states starting September 1, 2025.

This move could have a major impact on salons and beauty products in the UK, where the substance is still allowed — but expected to be banned by late 2026.

TPO is a photoinitiator — a chemical that helps gel nail polish harden quickly under UV or LED lights. It has been widely used in salons because it helps make nails stronger and longer-lasting.

However, some animal studies have suggested that TPO may be linked to fertility problems, cancer, and DNA damage. While there is no confirmed risk to humans yet, the EU has classified it as a CMR chemical (Carcinogenic, Mutagenic, and Reprotoxic) and banned it as a precaution.

Since Brexit, the UK has its own rules for chemicals under a system called UK REACH. In 2022, the UK government consulted with scientists, businesses, and public health experts, most of whom supported banning TPO by October 2026.

The UK government says it plans to introduce the ban, but it still needs approval from the Scottish and Welsh governments.

Many popular nail brands like OPI, Apres Nail, and Aimelli have already started switching to TPO-free products. The Gel Bottle, a leading manufacturer, says:

“100% of our products sold in the EU are now TPO-free. Reformulated versions are already rolling out and we expect to meet the UK deadline.”

TPO is popular in salons because it works with both UV and LED lamps, giving flexibility in equipment. But with the upcoming ban, salons are being encouraged to phase out products containing TPO and transition to safer alternatives.

There is no solid evidence yet that TPO harms humans during nail treatments, and no official recalls have been issued. Experts say the ban is precautionary, based on early signs of risk from animal testing.

Still, the beauty industry is under pressure to update products to meet new safety standards and reassure customers.

Key Points:
TPO banned in EU from September 1, 2025
UK may ban TPO by late 2026
TPO is used in gel nail polishes to harden nails under light
Early animal studies raised safety concerns, but no confirmed human risks
Nail brands already releasing TPO-free products
Salons advised to prepare for regulatory changes

If you’re getting your nails done in the UK, your gel polish may still contain TPO — but that could change soon. While there’s no need to panic, the industry is shifting towards safer alternatives, and by 2026, TPO may be gone for good.
