Billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk has announced the launch of a new political party in the United States, vowing to challenge what he calls the country’s broken and corrupt political system.
Musk introduced the “America Party” over the weekend in a post on his social media platform, X.
“When it comes to bankrupting our country with waste and corruption, we live in a one-party system, not a democracy,” today, the America Party is formed to give you back your freedom,”
This surprise announcement marks a major political move by the Tesla and Space X CEO, who was previously a high-profile donor to former President Donald Trump’s 2024 campaign. However, Musk’s relationship with Trump has soured in recent months mainly over a massive $3.4 trillion domestic spending bill supported by Republican leaders.
Musk, who once served as head of the now-defunct federal Department of Government Efficiency, had pushed to reduce government spending and cut bureaucracy. He publicly criticized the bill as “debt slavery,” accusing both major parties of fueling national bankruptcy through unchecked spending.
The fallout was swift. Trump reportedly threatened to revoke federal contracts from Musk’s companies and even suggested the possibility of deporting Musk despite the fact that Musk became a naturalized U.S. citizen in 2002. When asked by reporters whether he would follow through on the threats, Trump replied, “We’ll have to take a look.”
On July 4th, Musk launched a poll on X asking Americans if they supported breaking away from the traditional two-party system. More than 1.2 million users responded, with nearly two-thirds voting in favor of a new political alternative.
The creation of the America Party signals Musk’s latest move to reshape American society not just through technology, but now through politics. While it remains unclear how much traction the new party will gain, Musk has once again positioned himself as a disruptive force with the ambition to shake up the status quo.
