The Odinga family has once again been thrust into grief following the death of Beryl Achieng Odinga, sister to Raila Amollo Odinga. Her passing on Tuesday, November 25, came on a day heavy with symbolism—the very day Raila’s official 40-day mourning period for his late brother formally came to an end under Luo tradition.
The loss has deeply shaken the family, especially Raila’s daughter, Winnie Odinga, who shared a moving tribute to her aunt on social media. In her emotional post, Winnie revealed the painful timing of Beryl’s death:
“Today was the end of the official mourning period. 40 days were over. I know you’re in a better place, Auntie. RIP.”
She accompanied her message with a photo of her late father and Aunt Beryl during their younger years, adding a black heart emoji to signify loss and love. Another touching image she shared featured Raila and Beryl together, capturing the bond the two siblings shared long before political life consumed their family.
Following Beryl’s passing, her remains were taken to Lee Funeral Home, where ODM party leaders, family members, and close friends gathered to pay their respects. Kisumu Woman Representative Ruth Odinga confirmed the arrangements, expressing gratitude for the overwhelming support:
“We are currently at Lee Funeral Home, where the remains of our dear sister, Beryl Achieng Odinga, are being preserved. Thank you to the friends and colleagues who have come to commiserate with us during this difficult time.”
At the funeral home, supporters and relatives offered comfort to the grieving family. Witnesses described touching scenes of Winnie embracing her cousins, including Beryl’s daughter, as they mourned together.
Online, Kenyans responded with heartfelt messages of condolence, many expressing sympathy not just for Beryl’s immediate family but for the Odinga family’s recurring experiences with grief in recent months.
The Odingas—one of Kenya’s most prominent political families—now enter yet another period of mourning, leaning on one another and the community around them as they prepare to honor Beryl’s life and legacy.
