The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has urged Kenyans to put their safety first when meeting people they connect with through dating apps and social media.
In a Valentine’s Day message released on Saturday, February 14, 2026, the agency warned that while online platforms can help people form genuine relationships, they can also expose users to crime.
Rising Use of Dating Apps
The warning comes at a time when more Kenyans are using dating apps and social networking platforms to meet new people. Many relationships now begin online before couples meet in person.
However, the DCI said criminals sometimes use fake profiles to target unsuspecting victims. Some cases reported in the past have involved fraud, theft, blackmail, and even physical harm during first meetings.
Safety Tips for First Meetings
The DCI advised Kenyans planning to meet someone for the first time to take simple but important precautions:
Meet in a well-lit public place such as a busy café or shopping mall.
Avoid isolated areas or private homes for first meetings.
Inform a trusted friend or family member about your plans and location.
Arrange your own transport to and from the meeting.
Do not share personal financial information with someone you just met online.
The agency also urged people to trust their instincts.
“If anything feels wrong, leave immediately,” the statement said. “Never allow excitement or romance to cloud your judgment. True love respects safety.”
Stay Alert During Celebrations
Valentine’s Day is widely celebrated across Kenya, with many couples exchanging gifts and planning romantic outings. However, authorities say celebrations should not compromise personal security.
The DCI emphasized that personal responsibility and vigilance are key to preventing crime. It encouraged Kenyans to remain alert, especially when interacting with strangers online.
Report Suspicious Activity
The agency also asked members of the public to report suspicious behaviour or criminal incidents to the nearest police station or through official security channels.
As Kenyans celebrate love, the DCI reminded the public that safety should always come first.
“Enjoy the celebrations,” the agency said, “but stay safe and make wise decisions.”
