BREAKING NEWS: Granit Xhaka Joins Sunderland in £17M Deal as Premier League Return Confirmed

Former Arsenal and Bayer Leverkusen midfielder Granit Xhaka has completed a surprise move to Premier League newcomers Sunderland, marking his return to English football.

The Swiss international signed a three-year contract with the Wearside club in a deal worth £13 million upfront, with an additional £4 million in performance-based add-ons.

He will wear the number 34 shirt, the same number he wore during his time at Arsenal.
“I’m proud to be here,” said Xhaka. “I felt the energy and ambition from everyone at the club. It’s exactly the challenge I wanted.”

Xhaka returns to the Premier League after spending two seasons at Bayer Leverkusen, where he helped the German club win their first-ever Bundesliga title in the 2023/24 season.

Prior to that, the 32-year-old made 297 appearances for Arsenal between 2016 and 2023, winning two FA Cups and briefly captaining the side. Known for his leadership and fiery style of play, he became a key figure under multiple managers in North London.

The midfielder left Arsenal in 2023 following a strained relationship with fans and management, but quickly revived his career in Germany under Xabi Alonso at Leverkusen.

Following Alonso’s departure at the end of the 2024/25 season, Xhaka reportedly sought a return to England, opening the door for Sunderland to make their move.

Sunderland’s return to the Premier League after years in the lower divisions has been marked by bold signings and a clear statement of intent. Xhaka becomes their seventh signing of the summer, pushing their total spending over £100 million.

Other new arrivals at the Stadium of Light include, Enzo Le Fée (France), Habib Diarra (Senegal), Noah Sadiki (Belgium), Reinildo Mandava (Mozambique), Chemsdine Talbi (Algeria) and Simon Adingra (Ivory Coast)
Manager Michael Beale, who guided Sunderland to Premier League promotion, is building a squad with experience, technical quality, and strong character.

“Granit brings leadership, vision, and grit to our midfield. He’ll be crucial in our survival and long-term plans,” a club spokesperson said.

Xhaka’s signing has sparked excitement among Sunderland fans, many of whom see him as a key figure in the club’s fight to remain in the top flight.
The Black Cats open their Premier League campaign in two weeks against Aston Villa, where Xhaka is expected to feature.
