Bank of Tanzania Refutes Claims of Printing Money for Elections

The Bank of Tanzania (BoT) has strongly dismissed reports circulating on social media that it is printing extra money to fund the upcoming general elections.

In an official statement released on Friday, October 17, 2025, the Governor of the Bank of Tanzania, Emmanuel Tutuba, urged the public to ignore and condemn such misinformation, describing it as false, misleading, and harmful to the nation’s financial stability.

Governor Tutuba emphasized that the Bank operates under strict financial and legal procedures that guide the printing and circulation of currency in Tanzania. He explained that all monetary policies are carefully managed to control inflation and ensure economic stability.

“The Bank of Tanzania has not printed money for election purposes or for any other reason outside the approved national monetary policy. We urge Tanzanians to seek accurate information from official sources,” Tutuba said in the statement.

He further warned that spreading false information about the central bank could create unnecessary panic among citizens and investors, potentially weakening confidence in the national economy.

Economists have also cautioned that rumors of excessive money printing can lead to speculation, currency depreciation, and inflation fears. The BoT reassured the public that Tanzania’s economy remains stable, with sufficient reserves and proper monetary controls in place.

The central bank called on citizens, the media, and political leaders to act responsibly, especially during the election period, by verifying facts before sharing information that could mislead the public.

The Bank reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining economic stability, transparency, and trust in Tanzania’s financial system.
