After the Earthquake: Afghanistan Faces a Growing Humanitarian Crisis

In early September 2025, a powerful earthquake struck Afghanistan, causing massive destruction across the country, particularly in remote areas like Kunar province.

Entire villages collapsed under the force of the quake, leaving thousands of people trapped beneath the rubble. Rescue teams struggled to reach survivors because many affected villages were isolated and difficult to access.

The earthquake has worsened an already dire humanitarian situation in Afghanistan, where decades of conflict and poverty have left many vulnerable. The harsh terrain, combined with the damage to roads and infrastructure, made emergency response slow and challenging.

The Taliban government, now in control of Afghanistan, urgently called for international help to provide aid and support for rescue operations. However, given Afghanistan’s political situation and previous sanctions, questions remain about how effectively the United Nations and the global humanitarian community will respond.

As aftershocks continue to hit the region, survivors face a bleak future. Many are without shelters, food, medical care, or clean water. International aid organizations have expressed concern about the urgent need for support to prevent the crisis from worsening.

Experts and local officials emphasize the need for immediate and coordinated action. Without swift help, thousands more could suffer from injuries, disease, or exposure to harsh weather conditions. The earthquake not only destroyed homes but also shattered hopes for stability and recovery in a fragile country.

The international community now faces a critical test: will it respond quickly and generously to support the Afghan people during this emergency?
