Fes, Morocco – Nigeria continued their impressive run at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) with a 3–1 victory over Uganda, finishing the Group C stage with a perfect record of three wins from three matches.
Already qualified for the Round of 16, Nigeria head coach Eric Chelle made several changes to his squad for the final group match on Tuesday, December 30, with Victor Osimhen captaining the side. Despite the changes, the Super Eagles proved too strong for Uganda.
Nigeria took the lead in the 28th minute through Paul Onuachu. After the break, midfielder Raphael Onyedika scored twice in the 62nd and 67th minutes, putting the match beyond Uganda’s reach.
Uganda’s situation worsened when Salim Magoola was sent off in the 56th minute for a reckless challenge, leaving the Cranes with ten men. Rogers Mato scored a late goal in the 75th minute, but it was only a consolation.
The win marked the fourth time Nigeria have completed a flawless group stage at AFCON, having previously done so in 1992, 2006, 2022, and now 2025. Nigeria finished top of Group C with nine points.
Uganda ended the tournament bottom of the group with one point, while Tunisia secured second place after a 1–1 draw with Tanzania in the group’s other match.
Nigeria, finalists at AFCON 2023, will face the third-placed team from Group B or Group F in the Round of 16 on January 5.
