Kenyan activist Mwabili Mwagodi has been released on a personal bond of Ksh.500,000 as investigations continue into allegations that he published false information on social media.
Mwagodi was arraigned at the Milimani Law Courts on Wednesday, where prosecutors sought seven more days to detain him while they extracted and analysed data from his mobile phone. The court instead granted him bond and scheduled the case for mention on March 3, 2026.
According to investigators, Mwagodi allegedly posted false, malicious, and misleading content targeting government leadership through his X account between January 2 and 8 last year. His phone remains in police custody for forensic examination.
The activist was arrested at the Lunga Lunga border on Sunday while travelling to Tanzania. He was later transferred from Mombasa to Nairobi ahead of his court appearance.
The prosecution argued that Mwagodi posed a flight risk, claiming he had previously been out of the country for an extended period. However, his defence team opposed further detention, saying it would violate his constitutional rights.
Mwagodi’s mother questioned the basis of the charges, while Amnesty International Kenya said it would closely monitor the case, particularly concerns surrounding the alleged use of a “Red Notice” linked to the arrest.
The case continues as investigations proceed.
