ACT-Wazalendo’s presidential candidate Luhaga Mpina has officially been cleared by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to contest in Tanzania’s 2025 General Election. Mpina, accompanied by his running mate Fatma Ferej, received his nomination forms from INEC Chairman Justice Jacobs Mwambegele at a ceremony in Dodoma.
The event drew attention not just for the formal clearance but for Mpina’s bold decision to decline the official campaign vehicle offered by INEC.
According to Justice Mwambegele, each of the 18 presidential candidates is entitled to a brand-new Toyota Land Cruiser GX VXR, complete with a driver, to ensure fairness and smooth campaigning across the country.
Mpina, however, told journalists that his party would use its own vehicles and resources to conduct campaigns, saying ACT-Wazalendo is committed to showing financial independence and transparency.
“We appreciate the gesture from INEC, but we believe using our own resources gives us freedom and sends the right message to our supporters — that we are accountable and self-reliant,” Mpina said.
Political analysts say the move could boost Mpina’s image among voters who are frustrated with government spending on politicians, portraying him as a candidate focused on integrity and responsible use of public funds.
INEC has urged all presidential candidates to campaign peacefully and adhere to the electoral code of conduct as the race officially begins.
With his nomination confirmed, Mpina is expected to kick off his countrywide campaign tour next week, promising to focus on youth empowerment, job creation, and fighting corruption.
