The Tanzania Ports Authority (TPA) has signed a new agreement to begin the transfer, storage, and transportation of cargo from the Port of Dar es Salaam to the Kwala Dry Port located in Kibaha District, Coast Region.
This agreement, formalized through Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), is part of the government’s ongoing efforts to improve cargo logistics, ease port congestion, and boost efficiency in the movement of goods across the country.
At the signing ceremony held at TPA Headquarters in Dar es Salaam on Tuesday, TPA Director General Plasduce Mbossa signed the SOPs in the presence of the Director General of TASAC, Mr Mohamed Salum, and the Director General of the Tanzania Railways Corporation (TRC), Mr Machibya Masanja.
President Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan is expected to officially launch the Kwala Dry Port project during a visit to the Coast Region tomorrow. The launch will also include the inauguration of a high-speed freight train that will transport containers from Dar es Salaam to Dodoma, Tanzania’s capital.
The freight train is designed to improve inland cargo distribution, reduce turnaround times at the main port, and support the country’s vision for modern, integrated logistics infrastructure.
The Kwala Dry Port project is a strategic national investment aimed at, decongesting the busy Dar es Salaam Port, Speeding up cargo clearance and inland distribution, Boosting Tanzania’s position as a trade hub for landlocked neighbors like Rwanda, Burundi, and the Democratic Republic of Congo and Creating jobs and economic opportunities in the Coast and Dodoma regions.
This development aligns with Tanzania’s broader goal of modernizing its transport and logistics systems, supporting regional trade through the Central Corridor, and attracting more international business to its ports.
