EALA Race Sparks Debate on East African Community’s Value to Uganda

The race for representatives to the East African Legislative Assembly (EALA) has reignited debate over the relevance of the East African Community (EAC) to Uganda’s national interests.

During a discussion on On The Spot by NTV Uganda, analysts and commentators examined whether Uganda is fully benefiting from its membership in the regional bloc, even as political competition for EALA positions intensifies.

At the heart of the debate is the role of EALA MPs, who are expected to represent Uganda’s interests at the regional level by shaping legislation, influencing policy, and strengthening integration among member states. However, questions persist about how effectively these representatives translate regional opportunities into tangible benefits for ordinary Ugandans.

Participants highlighted that the EAC provides significant advantages, including expanded trade markets, free movement of people, and regional cooperation in infrastructure and security. Yet, concerns remain over uneven gains, bureaucratic inefficiencies, and limited public awareness about how the bloc directly impacts citizens.

The discussion also underscored the political weight of EALA positions, which often attract intense competition due to their influence and regional exposure. Observers argue that beyond political considerations, candidates should demonstrate a clear understanding of regional integration and a commitment to advancing Uganda’s strategic interests.

As Uganda prepares to select its representatives, the conversation is increasingly shifting from who gets the positions to what they will deliver—raising broader questions about accountability, effectiveness, and the true value of regional integration under the EAC framework.
