Rubio Commends Ruto as Kenya Backs U.S. Position on Iran Strikes

William Ruto held high-level talks with Marco Rubio on Tuesday, focusing on bilateral relations, regional security, and growing geopolitical tensions involving Iran.

According to a communiqué from the U.S. Department of State, Rubio expressed appreciation to President Ruto for publicly condemning Iran’s missile strikes targeting Gulf nations. The Kenyan leader had earlier criticized the attacks, which affected several countries, including the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Iraq, Oman, Kuwait, Jordan, and Bahrain.

The discussions also covered the objectives of Operation Epic Fury, a joint U.S.–Israel military initiative targeting Iran. In addition, Rubio acknowledged Kenya’s role in global peace efforts, particularly its contributions to security operations in Haiti and its commitment to supporting the transition to a Gang Suppression Force.

Beyond security matters, both leaders explored opportunities to strengthen economic ties and expand commercial cooperation, reaffirming the long-standing partnership between Kenya and the United States.

However, President Ruto’s stance on the Iran strikes has sparked debate back home. Critics argue that his condemnation may signal a shift away from Kenya’s traditional diplomatic neutrality, potentially complicating its foreign relations.

Despite the mixed reactions domestically, the engagement between Ruto and Rubio highlights Kenya’s increasing involvement in global diplomatic and security issues, as well as its strategic importance as a partner to the United States.
