Kenya Confirms Commitment to Co-Host 2027 Africa Cup of Nations with Uganda and Tanzania, Focuses on Tourism Boost

Kenya has reiterated its firm commitment to co-host the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) alongside Uganda and Tanzania, pledging to meet the Confederation of African Football (CAF) deadline for the hosting fee amid growing regional expectations.

This comes as the March 30 deadline for payment approaches, ensuring Kenya remains a key partner in the joint East African bid.

Government officials have confirmed that while the necessary funds are available, they are not yet included in the current financial year’s budget. A formal reallocation through a supplementary budget under parliamentary review is required before payment can be made.

The State Department for Sports assured stakeholders that Kenya will honor its financial obligations in time, following lessons learned from previous events such as the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN), which tested the region’s joint hosting capabilities.

The co-hosting arrangement is expected to provide a major boost to Kenya’s tourism sector, leveraging the tournament’s global exposure to attract visitors and showcase the country’s cultural and natural attractions.

Hosting AFCON also offers opportunities for infrastructural improvements, including stadium upgrades, enhanced transport networks, and hospitality development, leaving a lasting legacy for residents and future events.

Uganda and Tanzania have already settled their hosting fees, adding pressure on Kenya to finalize its financial arrangements. The government remains confident that the country will meet the CAF requirements, ensuring seamless participation in the historic Pamoja AFCON 2027 initiative.

The tournament, featuring 24 national teams and broadcast to hundreds of millions worldwide, represents both a sporting milestone and an economic opportunity for the region.

The successful hosting of AFCON 2027 will not only highlight East Africa’s organizational capabilities but also reinforce regional cooperation and economic growth, with tourism as a central beneficiary.

Kenya’s timely payment will secure its place as a co-host and help the region maximize the benefits of Africa’s premier football competition.
