Musk Unveils ‘Terafab’ Project to Build AI Chips and Power Future Space Technology

Tech billionaire Elon Musk has announced an ambitious new venture aimed at transforming the future of artificial intelligence and space technology, with plans to build advanced chips through a project dubbed “Terafab.”

The initiative, revealed on Saturday, March 22, 2026, will involve the construction of a high-tech manufacturing facility near Austin, Texas. The plant is expected to produce up to one terawatt of computing power annually—an amount comparable to the total electricity generation capacity of the United States.

Musk said the project will be a joint effort between his companies Tesla and SpaceX, reflecting the growing demand for computing power driven by advancements in artificial intelligence, robotics, and data infrastructure.

Despite relying on major global chip suppliers such as Samsung, TSMC, and Micron, Musk explained that current production levels cannot keep pace with the rapidly increasing needs of his companies. He noted that Terafab is intended to bridge this gap by enabling in-house chip design, manufacturing, testing, and improvement.

While the exact investment remains undisclosed, previous reports estimate the project could cost between $20 billion and $25 billion, placing it among the most significant private investments in semiconductor production.

In the long term, Musk envisions Terafab supporting between 100 to 200 gigawatts of computing power on Earth, with the ultimate goal of reaching a terawatt in space. He linked the project to his broader vision of humanity becoming a “galactic civilization,” capable of expanding beyond Earth and utilizing resources from other planets.

However, Musk did not provide a specific timeline for the project’s completion, and his history of ambitious timelines has drawn skepticism from some observers.

Even so, Terafab represents a bold step toward reducing reliance on external chip manufacturers while positioning Musk’s companies at the forefront of next-generation technology and space exploration.
